FBK Analysis: 5G Development Trends in Russia and Beyond

12 november 2025

  • Worldwide adoption of 5G technology is growing steadily, driven by rising demand for high-quality connectivity and faster data speeds. Key catalysts for the transition to 5G include the advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, industrial automation, and the enhancement of video content quality. According to Ericsson, global 5G network coverage is projected to rise from 45% in 2024 to 85% by the end of 2030 (excluding mainland China and Russia).

  • While such markets as China, India, and North America report 5G penetration rates of around 95%, Russia’s 5G rollout is currently in the stages of pilot projects and private networks. The testing of public pilot zones offering free 5G access lays groundwork for the future commercial launch of 5G networks. The implementation of corporate private 5G networks is another strategic path leading towards the widespread adoption of 5G in Russia.

  • Russian telecommunication operators are investing in building domestic 5G infrastructure and developing compatible equipment. Consequently, this investment is expected to fuel significant growth in national 5G penetration after 2025. In line with the Russian Communications Industry Development Strategy, 30% to 60% of the population is predicted to have access to 5G networks by 2035.
